Pindorama Institute is a Non-Profit and Non-Governmental Organization established at Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro State. Our property covers 480.000m² of Atlantic Forest at 1.000m above sea level, with naturally preserved water springs.
We are a growing group of scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers, communities and organizations, directing the creation of abundance, healthy and efficient work, with an interest in protecting both nature and the profits of sustainable investors.
Create a network to spread the knowledge on organic farming and the problems that the heavy use of pesticides and GMO seeds can bring to the health of society and environment.
Provide knowledge of local traditions of farming, usage of clean energy and building with the use of local and ecological materials like bamboo and earth.
Disseminate Permaculture principles and use those principles to help start-ups design their services and products with a sustainable approach
We receive around 1.000 students per year, from different states of Brazil and other countries to support us in our Volunteer Program and receive training on our areas of expertise through our courses like the Permaculture Design Course and Bamboo Building Courses.
In 2008 we reached 800 children from the age of 7 to 14 in the county of ‘Campo do Coelho’ with our program called “Adopt a Teacher”. Environmental teachers were sponsored by a company and they dedicated 20 hours weekly with ecologic education, using music and painting to bring awareness to children about sustainability and the consequences of using pesticides in the fields. The county of Campo do Coelho is facing big problems with the heavy use of pesticides for growing food.
In 2010 we reached 200 children with music classes in the county of Vargem Alta where the incidence of cancer and health problems have reached a critical point because of the abuse of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in the flower fields. Some children in the school were under controlled drugs for anxiety and sleeping problems, as most pesticides like Round Up have a direct effect on the nervous system. Our work was to try to raise student’s awareness about the pesticides so that they could pass on the message to their parents.
In 2012 we started a project in the county of Lumiar growing organic food in the school with the students. This effort was also to bring the awareness of the use of pesticides to the community.
We receive on a regular basis children from elementary school for one day so that they can practice permaculture.
In our property we have a Bamboo Shop where youths starting at the age of 16, can learn how to use bamboo for interior design, furniture, musical instruments and house building.
Our income comes 100% from our own efforts at the Bamboo Shop, building furniture and musical instruments for sale, which also brings income for the students that are part of the project, and also by the workshops and courses delivered here. This income is used to keep the activities going on here but it is not enough for new buildings and projects yet.
We have a 1 month advanced permaculture course that is delivered in English/Spanish that focus on Foreign students. Please check https://pindorama.org.br/farm-lab-advanced-permaculture-program-for-english-spanish-speakers/
Pindorama Institute works with the “Goals of Sustainable Development” proposed by ONU:
Quality Education: through courses, videos, books, seminars and talks with a high quality content of information, which is still far away from the mainstream education, nonetheless it’s recognized by it’s excellence and extremely important for people’s development as individuals and as a society.
Gender Equality and Female Empowerment: This year’s SILABAS (Latin-American Symposium of Bio-architecture and Sustainability) had a whole day dedicated to female empowerment. There were presentations and round tables to discuss architecture on poor areas, permaculture in schools and urban agriculture. Our courses qualify female leaders to act directly in their communities.
Energy that it’s clean and available for all: We provide online material and give presentations in public universities of architecture about the them, spreading the knowledge of low-cost techniques in a DIY style.
Sustainable Cities and Communities – Our online platform, EAD, has a full course dedicated to the subject “Ecovillages Design”. Besides that course, we have PDCs (Permaculture Design Certificate) 3 times a year, with scholarships to university students, teachers and to community leaders.
Action towards global climate change: We have kids, teenagers and youths coming to the Institute to participate on our environment educational visits, focused on creating awareness towards conscious consumerism, organic farming and eating, clean energy production, water resources, building with local materials, etc., showing existing implemented examples and teaching them how to do it, so they can be a positive impact for the society.
Life on Earth – Biodiversity, Forest and Desertification: Our Institute has an area of 480.000m² of rainforest (Mata Atlântica) which is preserved and it provides us with a lot of natural material, seeds and cuttings, that we propagate. During our courses and in other formations of Pindorama’s network, we spread the knowledge of agroecology, maintenance of a forest, soil recover and how to mitigate desertification.
Sustainable water management – Investment in research and in information so that everybody can have access to proper management of grey and black waters, higiene education, quality water, ‘reduce pollution and contamination by diminishing the usage of chemical products and dangerous chemical materials. Our goal is to rise substantially the efficiency of water usage in every sector of society, and secure sustainable water supply and water intakes from nature, and to hopefully reduce the number of people that suffer with scarcity of this great resource.
Our dream is that Pindorama can receive more and more students every year, and not only that, but also families that could come for longer periods of time. Our main goals for the years to come are:
– Build one Atelier where the local community can come to learn how to build with bamboo, make banana tree paper and fabric, bee wax candles and others handcrafts, to help them generate income
– Improve our Bamboo School/Cooperative so that we could help more designers to develop sustainable products using eco-friendly materials like laminated bamboo and natural fabrics, and also teach more students about bamboo for interior design
– Build a 15 meter diameter bamboo structure to use for lectures and activities with groups of up to 50 people
– Build 5 bamboo huts or tiny houses to be able to receive unschooling families
– Plant 5.000 more fruit trees (bananas, nuts, native fruits, etc) to be able to be a self-sufficient community
– Build a small acoustic earth dome exclusive for recording studio and for live classes/interviews
